The Lake District is located in the north-west of England and is the largest of England's National Parks. Its 2,292 square kilometres cover high fells, lush green dales, still lakes, vibrant villages and quiet hamlets. The National Park also includes part of the West Coast, with sandy beaches and rocky tidepools. Although the Lake District countryside may seem to be wild, its appearance is because of human activity, particularly farming. People have been using the area for at least 10,000 years and in 1951 it was designated as a National Park to protect it for future generations. The area is probably best known for its wide open spaces which attract thousands of people annually seeking a more energetic type of holiday and for its lakes Windemere and Conniston. The Lake District is an area of outstanding natural beauty and also has plenty to offer those seeking a more relaxed holiday. |
